Optimizing warehousing automation and high-precision laser marking workflows in next-generation manufacturing.
During our site inspection of the Kohler Arizona Smart Factory, we analyzed the implementation of end-to-end automated manufacturing processes. The facility relies on autonomous guided vehicles (AGVs), advanced robotics, and real-time operational telemetry to streamline sanitaryware production. The integration of modern edge devices has minimized manual errors and accelerated inventory turnover across the entire distribution network.
Prior to the digital overhaul, the plant experienced bottlenecks in tracing components through the firing and finishing phases. Standard barcodes struggled with durability under high thermal loads during ceramic processing. Additionally, the lack of immediate communication between the shop floor's operational technology (OT) and corporate IT databases created latency in product quality logs, causing delay in shipping protocols.
The engineering team deployed heavy-duty fiber laser engraving systems to mark permanent, high-contrast DataMatrix codes directly onto components prior to thermal treatment. This direct part marking (DPM) allows complete traceablity throughout the firing kiln. Wireless network nodes and edge gateways now capture scan telemetry instantly, feeding live data to the central ERP system to eliminate data latency entirely.
